Overview

YogaWorks Teacher Training

We believe the path to becoming a professional yoga teacher is a unique, satisfying, and life-affirming journey. Since 1990, YogaWorks has trained thousands of new teachers, including some of the most celebrated modern-day yogis. Our graduates are changing the world each day through their deep connection to yoga.

We offer serious students, aspiring teachers and current teachers the opportunity to deepen their practice, unlock their potential, and transform their understanding of yoga.

We offer a cohesive, multi-specialist approach to teacher training that blends the best of the Yoga tradition from the East and West. Our faculty is comprised of highly-trained, experienced, inspiring professionals with a profound understanding of yoga's transformative power. Our mission is to provide every yoga teacher with the foundation to teach skillfully with compassion, safety, and integrity.

About

At the cornerstone of our teaching philosophy is the idea that the concepts of Yoga must be first understood through the body and the dynamic, conscious practice of asana.

The YogaWorks method takes some inspiration from Ashtanga yoga and some from Iyengar yoga, integrating both into our own paradigm – a balance of precision and flow. Our programs emphasize a student's personal practice as the source for their creative teaching. To deepen their education, trainees in the YogaWorks Teacher Training will study anatomy and physiology, explore yoga's philosophical underpinnings, practice meditation and pranayama, and investigate the subtle body and the science of Ayurveda.

The foundational (200–Hour) program is ideal for serious students of yoga and aspiring teachers. It is recognized by Yoga Alliance and comprises three areas of study: The Theory and Practice of Yoga, Yoga Philosophy and The Art of Teaching.

The Theory and Practice of Yoga

The 200-Hour program will deepen and build your personal practice as you embark on a transformational journey toward becoming a yoga teacher. To facilitate a more scientific understanding of the body, you will study functional Anatomy, as well as the physiology of inversions, breathing and the nervous system. Moving beyond the physical, you will learn yoga philosophy, rooted in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Finally, you will begin to learn the fundamentals of meditation, Pranayama, Ayurveda and the chakra system

The curriculum will include a comprehensive study of the foundations, techniques, and mechanics of fundamental yoga postures with an emphasis on deepening the student's personal practice and recognizing and honoring it as the source for inspiration and creative teaching.

Yoga Philosophy

Over 2,000 years ago the sage Patanjali described the process of Yogic movement toward higher consciousness and peace in his treatise "The Yoga Sutras." His teachings are a living, practical model that, once understood, can be applied to all aspects of daily life. This course will introduce students to the wealth of inspiration available in the Yoga Sutras.

The Art of Teaching

The art of teaching is a form of yoga in itself requiring sensitivity, compassion and practice. A teacher must encourage and inspire, and be sensitive to both the needs of individuals and those of the group. The practical and subtle aspects involved in teaching addressed in this course include:

  • How to be an effective teacher
  • Use of voice, body language, touch
  • The art and science of sequencing
  • Learning how to see and understand bodies
  • The purpose and use of props: in personal practice and class setting
  • Hands on adjustments
  • Practice Teaching

Students who complete the 200-Hour Teacher Training program will:

  • Deepen their practice and understanding of yoga
  • Know how to structure and create a cohesive, well-rounded class
  • Acquire an understanding of yoga philosophy
  • Learning how to see and understand bodies
  • Become a member of the YogaWorks alumni association
  • Have the confidence and tools to begin teaching yoga

Students will also receive a diploma and Letter of Completion which they can use to register with Yoga Alliance at the RYT-200 level and share with prospective employers. Completion of this program will also qualify students for admission into YogaWorks' 300-Hour Professional Program.

Malachi Melville

Faculty - Malachi Melville

Malachi Melville is a senior teacher at Yoga Works in Santa Monica, CA and a 500-hour Yoga Alliance certified instructor. She has been teaching yoga for 12 years and conducting yoga teacher training for seven years. She has taught over 15 teacher trainings domestically and internationally.

Malachi's teacher training combines alignment instruction, intelligent flow, breath awareness and practical yoga philosophy, with a special love for compassionate hands on adjustments.

The blessings of yoga came to Malachi through recovery from an injury. After graduating from University of Colorado, Boulder, CO, she became a dedicated long distance runner and competitively raced cross-country, 10K's and half marathons. While training for a race, she was incapacitated by a herniated disc in her lower back. The injury was traumatic and life altering. To heal her back and return to normal activity without surgery, Malachi attended a yoga class. She fell in love with the physical and philosophical practice, and left San Francisdo to study at Yoga Works in Santa Monica.

Malachi completed the 200-hour Yoga Works teacher training in 1997 and soon after completing the training was asked to teach there. She studied Ashtanga Yoga with Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller, and simultaneously, Iyengar Yoga with Lisa Walford, during her first six years in Los Angeles.

In 2003 Malachi began teaching Yoga Works 200-hour teacher trainings. She is thrilled to have guided others onto the path of teaching yoga, having taught over 15 teacher trainings domestically and abroad. Malachi has expert and grounded knowledge in anatomy and physical alignment. She graduated from massage school in 1996, and apprenticed with a sports massage teacher for over a year. In 2008 she completed an advanced teacher training with Richard Freeman in Boulder, CO.

For Malachi, yoga is the way to nurture deep body awareness and mindfulness, rather than just an athletic endeavor. She believes in preparing the body and the mind to greet all experiences with strength, grace, and equanimity. As an athlete, she uses yoga as one tool in a larger system to cultivate a balance of strength, endurance, flexibility, and an undisturbed mind. Her back is stronger than ever, and along with her yoga, she still loves to run, cycle, strength train, climb bleachers, rollerblade and dance.

Malachi has appeared on the covers of Yoga Journal and Yoga International magazines. She is a regular model for Yoga Journal's master class section and Women's Health. She has been a featured model in Yoga Journal calendars and the Shakti calendar and book. She can be seen teaching a lower level class on Sportskool (Direct TV), and has appeared in several yoga DVD's.

Malaki taught the men's MLS soccer players and portions of the men's US soccer team for over three years. She has privately instructed well-known actors, musicians and composers in the L.A. area. She teaches exclusively at Yoga Works but is available for private classes and for workshops at other studios. She is also available for deep tissue massage.

Malachi has studied with too many master teachers to mention and thanks them all, but is mot influenced by Maty Ezraty, Rodney Yee, Richard Freeman, Paul Cabanis, Lisa Walford, and Annie Carpenter
